Murphey Candler Library Gets an Activ-Wand!!

Our Promethean board is great but many of the students were unable to fully enjoy the interactive functionality using the Activ-Pen because they they simply could not reach the middle and higher portions of the board without some help!
Now that we have an Activ-Wand, (we like to call it the Magic Wand) even the youngest students can reach up high and interact with the board during learning activities. Here are some pictures of what we have been doing with our new Activ-
Wand

Library Media Center Receives a New Rug!

The library media center is very grateful to all of the donors who contributed to our story time rug project. The students needed a comfy place to sit and rugs are very expensive! I posted our request on donorschoose.org and within two weeks our project was fully funded. We received our rug  less than one month from the time our project request was posted. (http://www.donorschoose.org/donors/proposal.html?id=361410) As you can see, Ms Clark's Kindergarten class is really enjoying the new rug. They were the first class to sit on it as they listened to the story "Skippyjon Jones, Lost in Spice' by Judy Schachner http://www.skippyjonjones.com/. Check out all of the Skippyjon Jones adventures!!!!

A Message from Author Toni Buzzeo

Famous author and Teacher-Librarian Toni Buzzeo sent a special message to the Murphey Candler students. She was gracious enough to create a quick message when we met at the 2009 COMO Conference.

Using http://www.wordle.net/

Ms Dyer gave us an idea. She has  been making Wordles with their classes. Wordles is a fun Java applet that was created by someone at IBM during his spare time. Using this program, students brainstorm concept related words and type them into the program.

A variation on the Wordle is the Wordle book ad as shown in this sample (some of the words came out a bit too small though). Here, you create the Wordle and then take a screen capture of it. Next, it gets pasted into another program like Publisher or PowerPoint with a copy and pasted picture of the book cover. After joining the two images together, copy the screen capture and save it as a .jpg. Or, leave it in Power Point and create a class PowerPoint presentation of Wordle book ads!!
